Smoke-Free Casinos Gain Momentum as Kansas Senate Passes Bill

The U.S. Nonsmokers’ Rights Organization (ANR) is applauding a win in Kansas, where the state Senate recently approved legislation that would prohibit smoking within casinos. This legislation aims to safeguard the well-being of both casino staff and visitors, and proponents believe it will also draw in new patrons who favor a smoke-free gaming atmosphere.

Cynthia Hallett, ANR’s President and CEO, commended the cross-party backing for the measure, stressing that casino personnel are entitled to the same clean air as everyone else. She pointed to the increasing number of casino workers nationwide who are vocalizing concerns about the hazards of passive smoking. This initiative, which originated in Atlantic City with a group known as Casino Employees Against Smoking’s Effects (CEASE), has motivated employees in Kansas and elsewhere.

Indeed, CEASE has broadened its reach nationally, recently collaborating with groups in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania to push for comparable smoking prohibitions. As momentum grows, advocates of the Kansas legislation are urging the state House to swiftly endorse it and submit it to Governor Kelly for signature.

From that point, they’ve established a system of collaborators inside gambling establishments – individuals such as croupiers and protection personnel – in locations like Kansas, Virginia, Nevada, and Indiana.

“This is not merely an isolated incident,” remarks Pete Nacarelli, co-founder of CEASE. “It’s a growing force, and it’s gaining traction.”
