Cyprus Cracks Down on Illegal Gaming and Eyes OPAP’s Monopoly

The authorities in Cyprus are closely examining their gaming laws, specifically the exclusive rights granted to OPAP. They’ve already begun taking action against unauthorized internet gaming platforms, with the intention of restricting access to approximately 2,500 of them. The objective is to establish fair competition for all participants, particularly those prepared to adhere to regulations and secure a license within Cyprus.

This scrutiny also extends to OPAP. Although they have been operating in Cyprus since 1969, recent analyses imply that the government might be experiencing financial losses – potentially a million Euros monthly – because of the existing contract. OPAP presently contributes roughly €10 million in taxes, but the government seeks a substantial increase – possibly doubling that amount and implementing a 20% levy on OPAP’s earnings from lotteries. It appears that Cyprus desires a more favorable arrangement and is prepared to make significant changes to achieve it.
