Tab NZ CEO Steps Down as Entain Partnership Takes Effect

Michael Todd, the chief executive officer of Tab NZ, a New Zealand wagering firm, has declared his departure from the company. This follows the New Zealand government’s endorsement of the company’s strategic collaboration with Entain.

Entain will furnish betting and broadcasting services to New Zealand for the next quarter-century under a pact reached in March.

The New Zealand government’s authorization signifies that the agreement will become operational on June 1st. Tab NZ asserts that the partnership will promptly provide financial backing to three equestrian racing ventures and 38 national athletic associations.

Tab NZ president Mark Stewart stated, “This approval fulfills a key recommendation from the Messara Report (2018), and we are pleased that the Racing Minister has authorized this strategic partnership agreement.”

“Tab NZ is at a crucial juncture in its history, confronting unparalleled rivalry from unregulated foreign operators and the prevailing global economic headwinds.”

With the backing of the new accord, the Tab NZ board has ensured a substantial augmentation in funding allocation to equestrian racing projects over the next five years.

The minimum level for the 2023-24 fiscal year will be NZ$170 million (GBP 86 million/EUR 99 million/USD 107 million), a 36% rise from this fiscal year.

The projected income for the fiscal years 2024-24, 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28 is estimated at 175 million, 180 million, 185 million, and 200 million New Zealand dollars, respectively.

Simultaneously, national athletic organizations will receive a portion of a one-time financial boost over the next three years, totaling 15 million New Zealand dollars. Additionally, 500,000 New Zealand dollars will be allocated to the New Zealand Sports Bureau for the advancement of women’s athletics.

Moreover, 5 million New Zealand dollars will be committed in advance to mitigating harm. This includes a 4 million New Zealand dollar investment to accelerate the implementation of facial recognition technology in 100 Tab venues, and a 1 million New Zealand dollar research fund to provide grants for gambling harm research.

“We are confident that this 25-year strategic partnership will fundamentally alter the landscape of sports wagering in New Zealand,” stated Dean Shannon, Entain Australia CEO. “We are enthusiastic about its potential to generate substantial economic benefits for New Zealand’s three major horse racing events and numerous national athletic organizations.”

Tod’s Departure
Shortly after the government’s approval, Tab NZ also announced that Tod would be relinquishing his position as CEO.

Nick Roberts will assume the role on June 1st and will prioritize the transition and leading the remaining Tab NZ into its future state.

The remaining legal entity will adopt a more streamlined operational model and will concentrate on the functions that Tab NZ retains.

These tasks encompass satisfying legal requirements, monitoring Entain’s regulatory and commercial achievements, investigating fresh business prospects with Entain, and collaborating with the government to modify New Zealand’s online gambling regulations.

“As General Counsel and subsequently Chief Transformation Officer, Nick was a key member of the team that worked diligently to ensure the strategic partnership with Entain,” remarked Stuart of Tab NZ.

“Nick’s business savvy and legal expertise are a valuable resource, particularly his experience and comprehensive understanding of the New Zealand legislative landscape, the gambling environment, and the contractual foundation of the Entain agreement, which will be invaluable to the Tab NZ board, our regulatory bodies, and stakeholders who depend on Tab NZ funding.”

Roberts added: “We have ushered in a new era for the destiny of horse racing. Now is the time for the leaders of the horse racing industry to seize this opportunity, construct a sustainable operating model over the next five years, and provide top-notch products and experiences for our patrons.

“Our athletic partners will also reap the rewards of Entain’s investment in products and services. Several significant national sporting organizations will be able to invest heavily in participation and elite performance as they receive additional funding from Tab NZ.”
